Magnitude-8.8 Chile quake triggers RP tsunami alert 1

According to the latest tsunami advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) named nineteen provinces along the east coast of the Philippines as areas of concern:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Isabela
  • Quezon
  • Aurora
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Albay
  • Catanduanes
  • Sorsogon
  • Northern Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Davao Oriental
  • Davao del Sur
  • It is expected that the tsunami will hit the eastern part of the country between 1-2pm tomorrow afternoon. Local seismologists on Saturday issued a Tsunami Alert Level 1 after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Concepcion, Chile on the other side of the Pacific Ocean approximately 3:34 a.m. Saturday (2:34 p.m. Saturday in Manila) Latest figures show more than 82 are confirmed dead and the death toll is expected to rise. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe.”
